This has pushed back the current estimate for latest safe harvest date without risk of flyspeck by a couple of days. For orchards that had fungicide coverage removed by heavy rains on August 29-30, the estimated latest safe harvest date is now estimated as September 29 - October 3. However, the outlook for September 15-19 is for slightly above normal chance of rain, which if it turns out to be true, would make the latest safe harvest date estimates move a few days earlier.
White apple leafhoppers were at a problematic level in at least one Maine location this week. This close to harvest, their impact as a nuisance to pickers is a more serious risk than additional foliar damage affecting the crop. Sevin (carbaryl) is an effective control with a relatively short preharvest interval. First generation leafhopper control with Sevin XLR was been obtained with reduced rate applications in New York trials. Presumably reduced rates will also be effective against second generation nymphs and adults.
Apple maggot trap captures at Highmoor Farm research plot have been low for the past week.

We won't have enough copies sold to
qualify for a pre-order. But it looks like we will be able to make
favorable arrangements when the book comes out next spring. Thanks to
those of you who responded.
