Apple maturity

A general outlook (no account for crop load, drought and other stresses) for when drop of non-spur McIntosh apples might reach 10% of crop is Sunday – Wednesday, September 23-26.

Weather observations and forecasts estimate that 165 chilling hours at Highmoor Farm will have accumulated by around October 4.  Research found that 500 ppm DPA for Cortland & 1000 ppm for Red Delicious is adequate for fruit harvested on or after October 4 and kept in Refrigerated Air storage.  Limited data suggest that same may also be true for McIntosh.  This is also the best guess for scald risk in Controlled Atmosphere storage.
