Starch index values and interpretation by Dr. Renae Moran.

Weather observations and forecasts estimate that 129 chilling hours at Highmoor Farm will have accumulated by October 3.  This is less than the 165 chilling hour threshold to reduce DPA dosage for Cortland and Red Delicious headed for long term storage.  Research found that 500 ppm DPA for Cortland & 1000 ppm for Red Delicious is adequate for fruit harvested after 165 chilling hours and kept in Refrigerated Air storage.  Limited data suggest that same may also be true for McIntosh.  This is also the best guess for scald risk in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage.
