Since it’s inception in 1989,
the Insect and Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab (IPDDL) has served over 25,000
citizens. Diagnoses were fielded for 2,500 specimens in 1999.Inquiries
arrive in the form of “walk-ins”, phone calls, e-mails, and regular mail.
Easy web site access offers visitors
the opportunity to obtain fact sheets and photographs of various insects
and plant diseases, including pests that are found in and around homes
in Maine (IPM for Maine
Homes). Educational inquiries
come in from all over the world.
For example: 20,000 “visits” above the recorded standard numbers above
were logged to the head lice fact sheet alone in 1999.
The clinic operates year-round
and offers diagnostic services to the public.
These services include plant disease identification, insect and insect
injury identification, and nutritional and cultural problem assessment.
Maine’s potato IPM program also makes use of the clinic for aphid identification
as well as disease assessment.
Funding for the clinic is obtained
through commodity groups and special grants.
